I thought the way it was working was just part of it.
I got good at the job. Got given more responsibility. Hired a few people. And before long every decision was coming back through me because that was the only way it got done right.
For a long time I thought that was just part of it.
The warning signs crept in slowly. I started forgetting to call people back. Started saying "I haven't got to that yet" more than I wanted to. The team was busy, work was coming in, but things were slipping through and the weight of it was sitting on me constantly.
I had ten people working for me and I was still trying to run it the way I did when it was just me.
That is when I understood the real problem. It was not the workload. It was that the business had grown but the way I was leading it had not.
I went and found people who had solved it before me. Got coached. Studied. Built a methodology from what actually worked in the real world of running a trade business.
"The business grew. My week got smaller."
We went from $2M to $4M, then doubled again to $8M. Eventually the business grew past $15M with more than 60 people, and it ran without me in the middle of it. Across my career, that is over $150M in sales.
That is what I teach now. Not theory. The actual things that worked.
